Bitumen is an oil based substance. It is a semi-solid hydrocarbon product produced by removing the lighter fractions (such as liquid petroleum gas, petrol and diesel) from heavy crude oil during the refining process. As such, it is correctly known as refined bitumen.

With over 7 years’ experience, ITO Company Bitumen is the world’s leading supplier of bitumen. We supply enough bitumen to help resurface 500 km of road every day; that’s enough to travel around the world 4.5 times in one year.  Our wide range of innovative bitumen products is designed to help meet the challenges of road, roofing and airport sectors, alongside specialty and industrial applications. Explore our specialist product pages below.

The vast majority of refined bitumen is used in construction primarily as a constituent of products used in paving and roofing applications. According to the requirements of the end use bitumen is produced to specification. This is achieved either by refining process or blending.

Bitumen in service (in the road, on the roof, ... ) is an inert material and represents no hazard to human health.

The primary use (70%) of asphalt is in road construction, where it is used as the glue or binder mixed with aggregate particles to create asphalt concrete. Its other main uses are for bituminous waterproofing products, including production of roofing felt and for sealing flat roofs.

The terms "asphalt" and "bitumen" are often used interchangeably to mean both natural and manufactured forms of the substance. In American English, "asphalt" (or "asphalt cement") is commonly used for a refined residue from the distillation process of selected crude oils. Outside the United States, the product is often called "bitumen", and geologists worldwide often prefer the term for the naturally occurring variety. Common colloquial usage often refers to various forms of asphalt as "tar", as in the name of the La Brea Tar Pits.

Naturally occurring asphalt is sometimes specified by the term "crude bitumen". Its viscosity is similar to that of cold molasses while the material obtained from the fractional distillation of crude oil boiling at 525 °C (977 °F) is sometimes referred to as "refined bitumen".
Asphalt properties change with temperature, which means that there is a specific range where viscosity permits adequate compaction by providing lubrication between particles during the compaction process. Low temperature prevents aggregate particles from moving, and the required density is not possible to achieve

Definition of bitumen penetration grade 60/70

Bitumen Penetration Grade 60/70 is a standard penetration grade Bitumen usually used as a Paving Grade Bitumen suitable for road construction and for the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties. This grade of Bitumen is mainly used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses. Penetration Grade Bitumen supplied by ITO (INTERNATIONAL TRADE OIL COMPANY) Co. is petroleum grade bitumen, manufactured from fractional / vacuum distillation of crude oil. The Bitumen supplied by ITO Trading Co. This bitumen is produced through aeration on vacuum bottom (the raw material used for making bitumen left in vacuum distillation column in oil refineries) in bitumen production units. Its penetration grade ( the measure of bitumen hardness) is between 60 to 70.

Penetration Grade bitumens are specified by the penetration and softening point test. The designation is by penetration range only. The penetration grade bitumens have a thermoplastic property which causes the material to soften at high temperatures and to harden at lower temperatures. This unique temperature/ viscosity relationship is important when determining the performance parameters such as the adhesion, rheology, durability and application temperatures of bitumen.

The Bitumen mode is dependent on temperature. The temperature-vs-stiffness relationship of bitumen is dependent on the type of crude oil and its refining method. Bitumen penetration grade 60/70 is semi hard penetration grade bitumen used as a paving grade bitumen which is suitable for road construction and repair. It is also used for the production of asphalt pavements with the below technical specification. This grade of bitumen is mainly used in the manufacturing of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses. Bitumen 60/70 is one of the most used bitumen grades and it’s a basic material for all other bituminous products.

Bitumen is a hydrocarbon material with high viscosity and colloidal structure, and black to dark brown color and is completely dissolvable in Carbon Disulfide and Carbon Tetrachloride. The most production type of bitumen in the world is petroleum bitumen which is obtained from crude oil distillation and they are classified based on the Penetration Grade (standard ASTM-D5). Also this group is able to supply all other kinds of this product according to customer’s needs.

Description of bitumen 10/20 Bitumen 10/20 is a type of penetration grade bitumen that is produced by the non-destructive refining of crude oil during petroleum refining.   Bitumen 10/20 ensures long-term savings as it allows for a thinner pavement design, which uses up to 30% less asphalt than traditional designs, while ensuring extended pavement life. Its penetration grade is between 10 to 20 and its softening point is between 58 to 66°C. It is a commonly used paving grade bitumen as it is suitable for road constructions and repairs and also for the production of asphalt pavements. This grade of bitumen is also mainly used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalts.  Uses of bitumen 10/20 Bitumen 10/20 is mainly used for road constructions and repairs. It is also used for hot mixed asphalt because of the properties of very strong viscosity compared to other grade. Properties of bitumen 10/20 Bitumen ITO company bitumen 10/20 is fully qualified and guaranteed through the expertise of our international inspectors to ensure the quality meets the industry standards. Bitumen ITO company bitumen is guaranteed to meet the international standard of ASTM.

Definition of bitumen penetration grade 30/40

It is a kind of bitumen and standard penetration grade. This type is petroleum grade bitumen, manufactured from fractional- vacuum destination of crude oil. The bitumen penetration grade 30/40 supplied by ITO Company is produced from the vacuum residue (short residue) feedstock. penetration grade bitumens are specified by the penetration and softening point test. designation by penetration range only. The penetration grade bitumens have a thermoplastic property which causes the material to soften at high temperatures and to harden at low temperatures.

The Bitumen mode is dependent on temperature. The temperature-vs-stiffness relationship of bitumen is dependent on the type of crude oil and its refining method. Bitumen penetration grade 30/40 is semi-hard penetration grade bitumen used as a paving grade bitumen which is suitable for road construction and repair. It is also used for the production of asphalt pavements with the below technical specification. This grade of bitumen is mainly used in the manufacturing of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses. Bitumen penetration grade 30/40 is one of the most used bitumen grades and it’s a basic material for all other bituminous products

Penetration determines the hardness of bitumen by measuring the depth to which a standard loaded the needle will vertically penetrate in 5 seconds, in a sample of bitumen maintained at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

Bituminous materials are dark brown or black, semi-solid or liquid, thermoplastic mixtures of hydrocarbons derived from natural or synthetic processes in which hydrocarbon mixtures have lost their volatile components leaving a denser residue. Natural bitumens come from exposed and weathered petroleum and rock deposits. Synthetic bitumens come from the residue remaining after the distillation of petroleum, coal tar, and other organic materials like wood and peat. The complexity of the high molecular weight hydrocarbon oils and resins bitumens contain make complete chemical characterization impossible. The terms bitumen, tar (8007-45-2), pitch (61789-60-4), and asphalt (8052-42-4) apply to any of these substances, although pitch and tar also describe the sticky resins that exude from various trees.
